Do you concentrate on one medium, or do you work in several?

I work in acrylics as it enables me to work quickly in detail and produce the texture that makes my art unique. When considering other mediums and discussing with other artists it always ends up being acrylics is best for my style.

Tell me about your workspace.

My dream is to build a bespoke workspace in my garden. Until then I have a studio at Artcore in Derby. I love the cliché that my studio is in the attic and is a great place to work and be involved in the Artcore community.

What inspires you?

I am continually researching and reading about amazing women from history. However, I only work on one painting at a time, as I like to immerse myself totally in that woman’s or women’s’ stories. I plan out my paintings in my head then go straight to canvas. I have to say I love painting the elaborate dresses, but the most rewarding part is sharing the stories and paintings with the public.

Do you have a favourite piece in your Little Gallery exhibition?

Usually, I say the piece I’m working on now is my favourite painting, however I’m particularly fond of “We Are Stardust” celebrating female astronomers in history and “Wild Flowers” celebrating the impact of female gardeners. I think it’s the ethereal beauty with a strong message that makes these pieces so powerful.

How did you start doing what you do?

After careers in theatre and education I started painting about eight years ago. And found I was drawn to my lifelong passions of fashion and history.

Storytelling has always been a strong part of everything I do so it is not surprising that my work has a strong narrative and illustrative quality.

During covid my art business really took off as I could focus on my marketing and my unique selling points. This was when I started selling internationally through social media.

Do you work on your creative business full time, or do you have another job as well?

I have been a full-time professional artist for over 6 years.

If you have spare time, what do you do with it?

My spare time is usually spent reading and researching; however I do love to travel and walk my two fur babies Hammie and Luna.

What’s next for you?

After my exhibition at TDM small gallery, I am taking part in the Derby Art Trail in August then the Melbourne Festival in September. I am also taking part in a series of podcasts and developing a book full of amazing women’s stories and artwork.
