Our Workshops

Book a workshop with one of our talented Makers and allow them to teach you a new skill or develop an existing one.

Our workshops will be held during January 2024 at: The Derbyshire Makers Pop-up Shop, Peak Village, Chatsworth Road, Rowsley DE4 2EJ

Workshops are suitable for all abilities, no prior experience is necessary, but more advanced techniques can be taught if you are lucky enough to already know the basics.

All tools and materials will be provided.

Unless otherwise stated, children over 10yrs may attend accompanied by an adult.

Mixed Media Embroidery

Get ready to explore the limitless possibilities of mixed media art.

Julie Leggett is a mixed media Derbyshire artist, who will guide you through this enjoyable and fun workshop.

Julie will show you how to create a wide variety of mixed media effects, in this fun, easy workshop, it is amazing how quick it can all come together. You will leave with a beautiful hoop ready to hang and be admired. The techniques are all stitched using hand sewing and embroidery techniques and once you have learnt them you can experiment and make different arrangements on your hoop. We will be sticking to a palette of two or three colours, this will give the best result. If there are colours that you want to include please bring them along with you.

Please feel free to bring along your own fabrics, ribbon, threads, and mixed media pieces e.g., washers, large sequins, seashells, industrial bits, and anything interesting if you like.

Passion for Graphite - improve your drawing skills

Learn to "paint with graphite". 

Local Derbyshire, artist Hazel Money, will introduce you to a series of easy and fun techniques which will help you create a piece of landscape art in simple steps. 

Learn how to use graphite as an aid to freeing up your drawing methods, using a variety of mark making styles.

Glass Fusion

Design and make your own creation in fused glass!

The workshop is ideal for both beginners and those with some previous glass experience.

Create a tea light candle shade or a flat piece in your own design which can be hung on a wall or in a window or outside.
You will learn how to cut and work with glass in its many forms and in both transparent and opaque colours. Step by step guidance will be given to enable you to complete your project successfully.

The price of the workshop will include all tutoring, materials, tools and safety equipment for you to complete your project. After firing in the kiln your creations will be returned to the venue approximately 1 to 2 weeks later for collection.

Not Suitable for Children under 16.

Learn the beautiful art of glass painting.

Join our stained glass art workshop and learn all the skills you need to create your own beautiful glass masterpiece. Kelly will guide you through the basics of painting a beautiful floral design on a cylindrical glass vase and you'll have access to a wide range of paints, stencils and relief materials to create your own unique pieces.

Our class is suitable for all levels of experience, from absolute beginners to those who want to gain new skills in art. We'll provide you with all the necessary materials and equipment

You will learn how to:

·        Use ceramic relief to outline your design

·        Apply a glycol based paint to the glass

·        Discover different techniques to apply the paint

At the end of the class, you'll take home your own finished stained glass pieces, which you can use to decorate your home or give as gifts to loved ones.

This workshop is a great way to learn a new skill, express your creativity, and create beautiful pieces of art that you'll cherish for years to come.

Glass Painting

Wonderful World of Essential Oils

Create your very own, unique aromatherapy blend.

In this hands-on session, you'll explore the art of mixing essential oils to create your very own, unique aromatherapy blend. You'll be able to use your blend to fragrance your home or enhance your self-care routine by adding a few drops to a body or massage oil.
During the workshop, you'll learn the ins and outs of blending essential oils, allowing you to craft a personalised 10ml aromatherapy blend that truly reflects your style and preferences.
You'll also have the chance to create your own mineral bath salts and infuse them with your freshly crafted aromatherapy blend and enhance them even further by adding some dried petals or botanicals. This hands-on experience promises to make your bath time extra special, turning it into a fragrant and luxurious retreat.
You'll leave the workshop with a basic knowledge of aromatherapy, along with your very own signature aromatherapy blend and a beautiful 300g jar of personalised bath salts. It's a wonderful opportunity to pamper yourself or create a thoughtful, handmade gift for a loved one.

Willow Weaving - Baskets

An introduction to Willow Weaving Basketry techniques

Join Joelle Joanne for an introduction to basketry techniques workshop, using willow grown and prepared in the UK.

Over the course of the session you will be able to create two  Catalan style trays.

These woven trays are known as tension trays or Catalan trays. They are perfect for displaying food/seasonal produce on the table or to use as placemats or trivets to protect surfaces from heat. 

Full information on sourcing willow, willow types and weaving methods will be given and all materials and equipment are provided.

Pottery Tealight Houses

An Introduction to Pottery -

Create a Cute Tealight House

Try your hand at Pottery with Derbyshire based Potter Ruby Holmes.

During the session Ruby will guide you through the steps to make your very own house tea-light holder. You will learn basic hand-building skills, some carving skills and some modelling decoration techniques. You can choose from some example templates or design your own house and explore your creativity.

Your pieces will be taken away and fired and glazed for you in a white glaze, or can be left bare to show the exposed clay. This can take a few weeks. When your pieces are finished you will be able to collect them from the Peak Village shop, or opt in to have them sent to you for a small postage fee.

Please note: Working with clay can be very tricky with long nail extensions, so please keep nails shorter. Clay can sometimes stain light fabrics (like tea does) so please don't come in your best white clothes!! Please feel free to bring an apron to wear if you’d prefer.

This course is good for beginners or those who have some previous experience with clay.

Painting Winter Trees

Sketching and painting winter trees- a natural art workshop

Derbyshire artist Diana Green will help you get to grips with painting beautiful winter trees.

Beginning with how to start by sketching, you will gradually build up to a finished tree.

All natural pigment paints provided, are hand made by Diana using earth pigments and plant inks and she will guide you in their use and teach you a little about how she makes them.

You will practice drawing from imagination as well as from a reference photo.

Vintage Valentine Heart

Vintage Textiles Transformed for Valentine’s Day

Guided by the lovely Karen Herrick of Harlequin Arts, you will be using vintage lace, scraps of silk paper and repurposed fabrics along with buttons, beads and sequins for embellishments, to create a hand stitched vintage- look, Valentine design, on evenweave fabric. These are all held together with invisible stitches and perlé thread. This can be added to a card or taken home for you to frame. 

You will have access to Karen’s stash of fabrics and be guided and encouraged to create your own unique design rather than copy the sample.

Quilling

Learn the ancient art of Quilling

Thought to date from the ancient Egyptians or Chinese, quilling is the art of rolling and shaping strips of paper to form different shapes, these are then glued together to create a piece of art.

Come along and learn the basic techniques with Derbyshire Maker Beth Beare and create this beautiful framed 3D quilled heart.

A great handmade gift for Valentines Day, Mothering Sunday or for a loved one.

Artwork can be placed in either a white or grey frame - please order this on the booking form.

Please also be aware that due to the nature of this technique, it does require some finger dexterity.

Willow Weaving - Sculptures

An introduction to Willow Weaving Sculpture techniques

Join Joelle Joanne for an introduction to sculpture techniques using willow grown and prepared in the UK. Over the course of the session you will be able to create two of the following items.

Heart - Using white willow you will create a heart up to 16" across and build up the thickness in a random cross cross weave. These are best suited for indoor decor, and can be adorned with dried flowers/ribbons etc at a later date.

Bees/Dragonflies/Snails - Coloured willows will be used to create these items and they look great hanging from trees or perched in plant pots. 

Small Birds- Stood in a log, these little birds look great on mantlepiece or as part of the garden. Using birds such as the wren or robins for inspiration you will create a small characterful bird that can be poised pecking or looking in the air.

Full information on sourcing willow, willow types and weaving methods will be given and all materials and equipment are provided.

Suitable for ages 8+, and all abilities welcome..
