Jenny Neale

Digital photography was my starting point in an ever changing creative journey which over the past 5 years has taken me from a literal approach to picture making to a more abstract workflow. I create images with a strong sense of design using composition, textures and colours, and quite often with a sense of movement.

Photography is, without doubt, my first love! … but as I enjoy experimenting, I developed an interest in creating cyanotypes and gel plate prints. Both became addictive processes but I enjoy the freedom these processes give, often surprising me with unexpected results.

Working from home in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside gives me inspiration and the opportunity to step outside the front door with my camera, although I have to admit that despite living many miles from the coast, seascape photography is a favourite playground for me with the opportunity to create simple compositions with strong values. The Northumberland coastline provides me with a great expanse of beach and quite often, moody skies, giving me lots of scope to create long exposure images, or to incorporate intentional camera movement. My ‘Dark Pink Peonies’, is one of my favourite images and made special by using flower from my garden. It was created using a technique referred to as ‘In the Round’. The image draws attention with its simplicity and elegance.

My journey into more serious photography started when I gave up my day job back in 2019. I joined a local camera club with very few skills but soon developed an appetite to improve my photography. I never imagined that my journey would have taken me to where I am today. I am always looking to experiment and learn new skills and am excited to see what the future brings!
